Mazda 2: Clock Spring
CLOCK SPRING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
1. Switch the ignition to off.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait for 1 min or more.
3. Remove the following parts:
- Driver-side air bag module (See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
- Steering wheel (See STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
- Column cover (See COLUMN COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
4. Disconnect the clock spring connector.

5. Press and detach the tab of the clock spring in the direction of the arrow
of the clock
spring in the position shown in the figure.
6. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the service hole of the combination switch
in the position
shown in the figure, and detach the tab of the clock spring.

7. Remove the clock spring.
8. Install in the reverse order of removal.
CAUTION:
- If the clock spring is not adjusted, the spring wire in the clock spring
could tighten
excessively and break when the steering wheel is turned. After installation,
always
perform the clock spring adjustment.
9. Perform the clock spring adjustment. (See CLOCK SPRING ADJUSTMENT).
10. Switch the ignition to ON.
11. Verify that the air bag system warning light illuminates for approx. 6 s and
goes out.
- If the air bag system warning light does not operate normally, refer to
the
on-board diagnostic system (air bag system) and perform inspection of the
system. (See FLOWCHART).
CLOCK SPRING ADJUSTMENT
NOTE:
- The adjustment procedure is also specified on the caution label of the
clock spring.
1. Set the front tires straight-ahead.
CAUTION:
- The clock spring will break if over-wound. Do not forcibly turn the
clock
spring.
2. Turn the clock spring clockwise until it stops.

3. From the stopped position, turn the clock spring counterclockwise 2 1/2
turns.

4. Align the marks.

CLOCK SPRING INSPECTION
1. Switch the ignition to off.
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait for 1 min or more.
3. Remove the following parts:
- Driver-side air bag module (See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE
REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
- Steering wheel (See STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
- Column cover (See COLUMN COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
- Clock spring (See CLOCK SPRING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
4. Verify that the continuity is as indicated in the table.
- If not as indicated in the table, replace the clock spring.
NOTE:
- When the vehicle-side connector for the clock spring is disconnected,
terminals 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D are shorted to
prevent unexpected operation (deployment) of the air bag module.


PASSENGER AIR BAG DEACTIVATION (PAD) INDICATOR LIGHT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
NOTE:
- The PAD indicator light (LED) is built into the hazard warning switch
panel.
1. Remove the PAD indicator light. (See CENTER PANEL UNIT
DISASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY).
PASSENGER AIR BAG DEACTIVATION (PAD) INDICATOR LIGHT INSPECTION
- Remove the PAD indicator light. (See CENTER PANEL UNIT
DISASSEMBLY/ASSEMBLY).
- Connect battery positive voltage to the PAD indicator light terminal A,
ground to
terminal B.

- Verify that the PAD indicator light illuminate.
- If the PAD indicator light does not illuminate, replace the PAD
indicator
light.

1. Remove the dipstick.
2. One way of determining whether the transaxle should be disassembled is by

If the ATF is muddy or varnished.
If the ATF smells strange or unusual.
